5 nursery rhymes to sing in the bath

You don’t get a name like The Rhyming Mum without having sung a lot of nursery rhymes along the way. So, as part of the #ABC123challenge I’ll be posting 5 nursery rhymes a week each relating to a different letter of the alphabet. This week is B. And B is for bath.

Bath time is one of my favourite moments of the day. Roo has always been a water baby and loves splashing around.

As well as using bath time to get clean we like to burn off the last of our energy by singing songs and playing games.

Here are 5 of our favourite nursery rhymes to sing in the bath.

When I was one

When I was one, I sucked my thumb,
The day I went to sea.
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
And the Captain said to me:
“We’re going this way, that way,
Forwards backwards,
Over the Irish Sea.
A bottle of rum to fill my tum
A Pirates’ life for me.”

When I was two, I buckled my shoe,
The day I went to sea.
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
And the Captain said to me:
“We’re going this way, that way,
Forwards backwards,
Over the Irish Sea.
A bottle of rum to fill my tum
A Pirates’ life for me.”

When I was three, I grazed my knee,
The day I went to sea.
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
And the Captain said to me:
“We’re going this way, that way,
Forwards backwards,
Over the Irish Sea.
A bottle of rum to fill my tum
A Pirates’ life for me.”

When I was four, I swam ashore,
The day I went to sea.
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
And the Captain said to me:
“We’re going this way, that way,
Forwards backwards,
Over the Irish Sea.
A bottle of rum to fill my tum
A Pirates’ life for me.”

When I was five, I learned to dive,
The day I went to sea.
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
And the Captain said to me:
“We’re going this way, that way,
Forwards backwards,
Over the Irish Sea.
A bottle of rum to fill my tum
A Pirates’ life for me.”

I’d never heard this nursery rhyme until we started swimming lessons. Roo instantly loved the tune so it’s a fun one to sing whilst we pretend to be pirates. There are plenty more verses too so it can go on and on for as long as needed.

5 little speckled frogs

Five little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs.
Yum yum!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were four speckled frogs.
Glub glub!

Four little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs.
Yum yum!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were three speckled frogs.
Glub glub!

Three little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs.
Yum yum!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were two speckled frogs.
Glub glub!

Two little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs.
Yum yum!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there was one speckled frog.
Glub glub!

One little speckled frog,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs.
Yum yum!
He jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were no speckled frogs.
Glub glub!

We have some frog bath toys that are perfect for singing along to this one. When we’re having a quick bath we only sing about three frogs and hope Roo doesn’t notice.

5 little ducks

Five little ducks went swimming one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack”
And only four little ducks came back!

Four little ducks went swimming one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack”
And only three little ducks came back!

Three little ducks went swimming one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack”
And only two little ducks came back!

Two little ducks went swimming one day
Over the hill and far away.
Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack”
And only one little duck came back!

One little duck went swimming one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said, “Quack quack quack quack”
And all her five little ducks came back!

Like the frogs we also have duck toys, complete with a mother duck that carries her babies around. We also shorten this one to three ducks when needed.

Incy Wincy Spider

Incy Wincy spider climbed up the water spout,
Down came the rain and washed the spider out,
Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain,
And Incy Wincy spider climbed up the spout again.

We sing this song when playing with our pouring cups. Roo likes to pour the water over her head when the spider gets washed out.

A sailor went to sea sea sea

A sailor went to sea, sea, sea,
To see what he could see, see, see.
But all that he could see, see, see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.

I have absolutely no idea why this one is such a hit! It definitely wouldn’t make my list of favourites but Roo loves it.

Do you sing whilst your scrubbing in the bath? Let me know what songs in the comments below.
